Spring and Cable Metal Choices
Two Parts, Both Steel, Both Ruined by the Same Air
The torsion spring above your door and the two lift cables running down its sides are the parts that actually carry the weight. Everything else guides. These two hold. They are also the two parts where the material specification changes the outcome most, and where the standard national advice is written for a climate that is not this one.
Springs: Galvanised or Oil Tempered
A torsion spring is a coil of hardened wire wound over a shaft. Turn it up under tension and it stores enough energy to counterbalance the door. Two wire types dominate.
Oil tempered wire is the industry default. It is heat treated in oil, which gives it a consistent grain and excellent resistance to fatigue. It holds its set better, it sags less over its life, and for any given wire size and length it carries the higher cycle rating. Ten thousand cycles is a common standard rating and heavier duty springs run well past that. On paper it is simply the better spring, and five miles inland we would fit it without a second thought.
Galvanised wire is a slightly softer wire carrying a zinc coating. For the same dimensions it will be rated for fewer cycles. Judged on the spec sheet alone it looks like the budget option, and in most of the country that is a fair reading.
Why We Fit Galvanised Near the Water
A cycle rating is measured in a dry test rig, cycling a spring until fatigue cracks it. That is a real failure mode and it is not the one that gets springs on this coast.
What gets them is corrosion. Salt in the marine layer holds moisture against the bare surface of an oil tempered spring, and it starts to rust within months of going up. Rust does not merely look bad on a spring. It pits the surface, and a pit in a wire under high cyclic stress is a stress concentration. The crack starts at the pit. The spring then breaks at a small fraction of the cycles it was rated for, which is why owners near the sand keep being told they got unlucky with a bad spring when nothing of the sort happened.
Zinc coating gives up some rated cycle life and buys corrosion resistance, and within a mile or so of the water that trade comes out clearly in favour of the zinc. Beyond a couple of miles inland it stops being worth it and oil tempered is the better buy again. That is genuinely the whole decision, and where you live decides it.
One thing we will not sell you is powder coating over an already galvanised spring. It looks reassuring, it chips at the coil contact points where the coils rub, and it hides the surface you would otherwise be able to inspect.
Cables: Galvanised Aircraft or Stainless
A lift cable is stranded steel, usually seven strands of nineteen wires, running from the bottom bracket up to a grooved drum on the torsion shaft.
Galvanised aircraft cable is the standard. Zinc coated carbon steel, strong, cheap, and entirely adequate inland.
Stainless cable in the 302 or 304 grades costs roughly three to four times as much per set. It resists surface corrosion far better and it does not weep the orange staining down the door jamb that gives a tired galvanised cable away.
The Honest Verdict on Stainless
It is worth it for some houses and not for others, and anyone telling you it is always worth it is selling.
It earns the money if you are within a few blocks of the water, use the door several times a day, and expect to be in the house for years. Over that horizon you will change galvanised cables two or three times and the stainless set will still be there.
It does not earn the money if you are further inland, or if you might move in a couple of years. Galvanised cable inspected annually and changed on a sensible schedule is cheaper across the same period, and the inspection is the part that actually keeps you safe.
There is also something worth knowing whichever way you go. Stainless is not immune. It corrodes more slowly, but it still corrodes from inside the strand where the wires touch, and it hides that damage exactly as well as galvanised does. Neither cable can be judged from a glance across the garage. Both have to be looked at along their length and at the drum, where fraying, a strand standing proud, flattening, or rust weeping from between the strands are the signs it is going.
What a Visit Looks Like
We wind the tension down properly with bars, never with a screwdriver, and we replace springs and cables as matched pairs. Mismatched stretch between two cables pulls the door out of square, and one new spring beside one aged spring loads the shaft unevenly. Then we set the drums so both sides wind in step, run the balance test, and check the door holds at the halfway point.
